A blind ass, which had undertaken a long journey, wandered from the road into a forest.
一頭瞎眼的驢子在長途跋涉時(shí)迷了路，走進(jìn)了森林。
As the night came on, our foolish fellow went so far into the thicket that it couldn't move either backward or forward; and even one who had eyes would have been unable to get out of that difficulty. But an owl, by good luck, happened to be in the neighbourhood, and offered to act as a guide to the ass.

We all know how well owls see at night. Hills, hillocks, precipices—all these our owl distinguished as if it had been daylight.By daybreak, it had made its way with the ass to the level road.
眾所周知，貓頭鷹在夜間視力很好，斜坡啦、山丘啦、懸崖啦——它都能辨認(rèn)出來，就像在白天一樣。黎明時(shí)分，它已領(lǐng)著驢子來到了平地上。
Now, how could any one part with such a guide? So the ass entreated the owl not to desert it, and determined to visit the whole world in the owl's company.
現(xiàn)在，誰愿意離開這么好的向?qū)?于是驢子懇求貓頭鷹不要撇下它，驢子決意與它結(jié)伴一同環(huán)游世界。
Our owl seated itself like a lord on the back of the ass, and the two friends began to continue their journey.
貓頭鷹像君主般端坐在驢背上，這兩個(gè)好朋友繼續(xù)它們的旅行。
But did it prosper? No. The sun had scarcely begun to glow in the morning sky, when a greater than nocturnal darkness hid everything from the owl's eyes. But our owl is obstinate; it directs the ass at random.

There was really no pool on the right; but on the left there was even worse.

And, the owl and the ass fell into the ravine together.

從前,印度有一位國王,他養(yǎng)了許多大象.有一天,他正坐在大象身上游玩,忽然看見一群瞎子在路旁歇息,便命令他們走過來,問他們:"你們知道大象是什么樣子嗎?"瞎子們同聲否認(rèn)道:"陛下,我們不知道."國王笑道:"你們親自用手摸一摸吧,然后向我報(bào)告."
瞎子們趕緊圍著大象摸起來.過了一會(huì)兒,他們開始向國王報(bào)告.
摸到象耳朵的瞎子說:"大象同簸箕一樣."
摸到象腿的瞎子說:"大象和柱子一樣."
摸到象背的瞎子說:"大象好似一張床."
摸到象尾的瞎子說:"大象好似繩子."
國王聽了哈哈大笑起來.原來他們把自己摸到的某一個(gè)部分誤認(rèn)為是全體。
后來人們便用"瞎子摸象"來形容那些觀察事物片面,只見局部不見整體的人。
【篇三】
從前，有位老漢住在與胡人相鄰的邊塞地區(qū)，來來往往的過客都尊稱他為“塞翁”。塞翁生性達(dá)觀，為人處世的方法與眾不同。
有一天，塞翁家的馬不知什么原因，在放牧?xí)r竟迷了路，回不來了。鄰居們得知這一消息以后，紛紛表示惋惜。可是塞翁卻不以為意，他反而釋懷地勸慰大伙兒：“丟了馬，當(dāng)然是件壞事，但誰知道它會(huì)不會(huì)帶來好的結(jié)果呢?”
果然，沒過幾個(gè)月，那匹迷途的老馬又從塞外跑了回來，并且還帶回了一匹胡人騎的駿馬。于是，鄰居們又一齊來向塞翁賀喜，并夸他在丟馬時(shí)有遠(yuǎn)見。然而，這時(shí)的塞翁卻憂心忡忡地說：“唉，誰知道這件事會(huì)不會(huì)給我?guī)頌?zāi)禍呢?”
塞翁家平添了一匹胡人騎的駿馬，使他的兒子喜不自禁，于是就天天騎馬兜風(fēng)，樂此不疲。終于有一天，兒子因得意而忘形，竟從飛馳的馬背上掉了下來，摔傷了一條腿，造成了終生殘疾。善良的鄰居們聞?dòng)嵑螅s緊前來慰問，而塞翁卻還是那句老話：“誰知道它會(huì)不會(huì)帶來好的結(jié)果呢?”
又過了一年，胡人大舉入侵中原，邊塞形勢驟然吃緊，身強(qiáng)力壯的青年都被征去當(dāng)了兵，結(jié)果十有*都在戰(zhàn)場上送了命。而塞翁的兒子因?yàn)槭莻�(gè)跛腿，免服兵役，所以他們父子得以避免了這場生離死別的災(zāi)難。
這個(gè)故事在世代相傳的過程中，漸漸地濃縮成了一句成語：“塞翁失馬，焉知禍福。”它說明人世間的好事與壞事都不是絕對的，在一定的條件下，壞事可以引出好的結(jié)果，好事也可能會(huì)引出壞的結(jié)果。
