【禪師和男孩】

　　一位父親為兒子擔(dān)心。兒子16歲了，卻沒有一點(diǎn)勇氣。于是，父親決定去拜訪一位禪師，請(qǐng)他訓(xùn)練兒子。

　　禪師對(duì)男孩的父親說：“你應(yīng)該讓他單獨(dú)留在這里。不出3個(gè)月，我要讓他成為一個(gè)真正的男子漢。不過，在這段時(shí)間，你不能來見他。”

　　3個(gè)月后，男孩的父親又來見禪師。禪師安排這個(gè)男孩和一位經(jīng)驗(yàn)豐富的拳師進(jìn)行拳擊比賽。拳師每次一出手，男孩就倒在地上，但男孩又馬上站起來；每次將他擊倒，他就又站起來。幾個(gè)回合后，禪師問道：“你認(rèn)為自己的孩子怎么樣？”

　　“真丟人！”男孩的父親說，“我絕沒想到他這樣不堪一擊。我不需要他再留在這里了�！�

　　“很遺憾，你只看到了這一點(diǎn)。難道你沒看到他每次倒下后并沒有哭泣，而是重新站起來了嗎？這才是你想要他擁有的那種勇氣�！�

　　A father was worried about his son, who was sixteen years old but had no courage at all. So the father decided to call on a Buddhist monk to train his boy.

　　The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father, "You should leave your son alone here. I'll make him into a real man within three months. However, you can't come to see him during this period."

　　Three months later, the boy's father returned. The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and an experienced boxer. Each time the fighter struck the boy, he fell down, but at once the boy stood up; and each time a punch knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, "What do you think of your child?"

　　"What a shame!" the boy's father said. "I never thought he would be so easily knocked down. I needn't have him left here any longer."

　　"I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of crying? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have."

【六英尺的距離】

　　A man walking in the night slipped from a rock. Afraid that he would fall down thousands of feet, because he knew that place was a very deep valley, he took hold of a branch that was hanging over the rock. In the night all he couls see was a bottomless abyss. He shouted, his own shout reflected back--there was nobody to hear.

　　You can imagine that man and his whole night of scare. Every moment there was death, his hands were becoming cold, he was losing his grip...... and as the sun came out he looked down and he laughed. There was no abyss. Just six inches down there was a rock. He could have rested the whole night, slept well---the rock was big enough---but the whole night was a nightmare.

　　Fear is only six inches deep. Now it is up to you whether you want to go on cling to the branch and turn your life into a nightmare, or whether you would love to leave the branch and stand on your feet.

　　There is nothing to fear.

　　一個(gè)人在趕夜路時(shí)，突然從巖石上跌了下去，嚇得他趕緊抓住了巖石上的樹枝。因?yàn)樗�知道這一帶有個(gè)深谷

　　Jupiter issued a proclamation to all the beasts of the forest and promised a royal reward to the one whose offspring should be deemed the handsomest. The Monkey came with the rest and presented, with all a mother's tenderness, a flat-nosed,hairless, ill-featured young Monkey as a candidate for the promised reward. A general laugh saluted her on the presentation of her son. She resolutely said, "I know not whether Jupiter will allot the prize to my son, but this I do know, that he is at least in the eyes of me his mother, the dearest, handsomest, and most beautiful of all."

　　宙斯向森林里所有獸類發(fā)布公告，并承諾誰的子孫最美麗最帥就授予他皇家獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)。一只母猴和其它動(dòng)物一起來了，這只母猴帶著一個(gè)母親特有的溫柔介紹著她的塌鼻子、禿頭的、五官不端正的小猴子作為候選人來參選。
