　　Issue：

　　1. Claim: The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models.

　　Reason: Heroes and role models reveal a society's highest ideals.

　　Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

　　分析：支持的論據(jù)：Hero reflects morality and spirit of a nation,比如Thomas Jefferson，The Declaration of Independence, the Convention rights

　　Hero reflects social propensity/tendency: Gandhi, Martin Luther King

　　反對(duì)的論據(jù)：Other facets could be an illustration of thorough perspectives of a society: religion, custom, education.

　　2. In any profession—business, politics, education, government—those in power should step down after five years.

　　Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

　　分析：對(duì)于商業(yè)領(lǐng)域，優(yōu)點(diǎn)比如說(shuō)，能夠出現(xiàn)更多新鮮的想法。缺點(diǎn)比如說(shuō)在交接權(quán)利時(shí)帶來(lái)的對(duì)效率的影響，會(huì)降低效率，甚至可能出現(xiàn)逃避責(zé)任的現(xiàn)象。

　　對(duì)于政治和政府方面，優(yōu)點(diǎn)也可以體現(xiàn)在有更多的新想法出現(xiàn)，還可以避免持續(xù)擁有權(quán)利帶來(lái)的貪污腐敗。缺點(diǎn)是可能會(huì)影響在持續(xù)進(jìn)項(xiàng)中的，對(duì)社會(huì)有改善的項(xiàng)目。

　　3.Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.

　　ARGUMENT

　　1. When Stanley Park first opened, it was the largest, most heavily used public park in town. It is still the largest park, but it is no longer heavily used. Video cameras mounted in the park's parking lots last month revealed the park's drop in popularity: the recordings showed an average of only 50 cars per day. In contrast, tiny Carlton Park in the heart of the business district is visited by more than 150 people on a typical weekday. An obvious difference is that Carlton Park, unlike Stanley Park, provides ample seating. Thus, if Stanley Park is ever to be as popular with our citizens as Carlton Park, the town will obviously need to provide more benches, thereby converting some of the unused open areas into spaces suitable for socializing.

　　Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

　　分析：第一，上個(gè)月的監(jiān)控視頻表明S公園每天平均停車僅50輛， 說(shuō)明受歡迎程度下降。但只看停車數(shù)量不能證明是公園的問(wèn)題，還可能是上個(gè)月天氣惡劣，大家都不怎么出門。就算不是其他原因，也可能是大家不開(kāi)車來(lái)公園，住的近的人可能是步行前往，或者出于環(huán)保而選擇公共交通，不能只看車的數(shù)量就說(shuō)是公園沒(méi)有魅力了，不受歡迎了。

　　第二，C公園工作日就有150人來(lái)訪，但是不能從這個(gè)就推出C公園比S公園更受歡迎。首先這兩個(gè)公園的位置就是不一樣的，比如文中寫C是在商業(yè)中心，可能本身商業(yè)中心的人就更多，大家逛街累了順便來(lái)公園一下。

　　第三，50輛車和150人也不能對(duì)比，50輛車?yán)锟赡苎b著比150更多的人數(shù)。

　　第四，就算S公園的受歡迎程度確實(shí)下降了，但沒(méi)有理由說(shuō)S提供更多的椅子，大家就會(huì)來(lái)。椅子和受歡迎程度不成比例，也許大家是因?yàn)檫@個(gè)S公園環(huán)境不好而不愿意來(lái)，加了椅子也不會(huì)讓環(huán)境變好，所以這種解決方法值得商榷。

　　2. The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of a food distribution company with food storage warehouses in several cities.

　　"Recently, we signed a contract with the Fly-Away Pest Control Company to provide pest control services at our fast-food warehouse in Palm City, but last month we discovered that over $20,000 worth of food there had been destroyed by pest damage. Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. Even though the price charged by Fly-Away is considerably lower, our best means of saving money is to return to Buzzoff for all our pest control services."

　　Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.
